If you have had some experience with encaustic and would like to delve in more deeply, try something new or review some techniques this is your opportunity. You will focus on painting ideas, interpreting ongoing work in other mediums and creating a body of work. Thrive in an environment where you will receive constructive feedback and technical information from the instructor as well from your peers. You will be given small wooden panels (4x5”) for experimenting and can bring 9x12” boards for larger work. Equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be provided by the instructor. If you would like to work larger please bring wood panels up to 9×12”. This is a good size for workshops. The equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be provided. This is a solvent free medium.

Each person can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the workshop, artists will be familiar with a range of techniques which they can use in their work. Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. Bring wood panels up to 9”x12” if you'd like to make larger, more resolved work.

Encaustic is a luminous medium that is made up of molten beeswax, pigment and natural tree resin. The resulting surface is characterized by lush and translucent color. The viscous medium can be smooth and shiny or textured and three dimensional. After a brief history and a short review of safety practices, demonstrations will be presented of melting and fusing, easy parchment paper image transfer, collaged book making and texture using a brush, heated tools and a rubber stencil. At the end of the workshop you will be familiar with a range of techniques and ready to either work on your own or be prepared for other more advanced workshops.

Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, D.C. 27th Annual Week of the Arts where our upper school students break from their regular curriculum and focus on the arts.

Encaustic consists of beeswax, pigment and damar resin and was first used by the Egyptians for their Mummy Portraits. The process is now updated with new tools and equipment. Participants will learn safe studio practices, surface preparation, how to create luminous smooth and textured layers, fusing, collage, and a variety of other techniques.
