July 13 Saturday at The Arts Center at Glen Allen, VA

complete

Encaustic painting is a process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Artists come to encaustic painting from many other mediums which then creates a dynamic and rich experience. Areas covered include: safe studio practices, surface preparation, and resources. Various demonstrations will be scheduled with plenty of time to experiment. Participants will learn techniques such as melting through, line and edge, transfers, texture and collage. Each person can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the workshop, artists will be familiar with a range of techniques which they can use in their work. Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. Bring wood panels up to 9”x12” if you'd like to make larger, more resolved work. An optional materials list will be supplied once you register.

Encaustic is a luminous medium that is made up of molten beeswax, pigment and resin. It can be smooth and shiny or textured and three-dimensional all on the same painting. We will explore melting and fusing the wax, making clean lines and edges, texture, and collage. Encaustic is ideal for working abstractly or in a more representational style. You will be given a small wooden panel (4x5”) for each of the techniques demonstrated, and you can bring your own 9x12 inch boards for larger work. The instructor will provide equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools. No encaustic experience is necessary. For students who have taken encaustic painting in the past this is an opportunity to review processes, delve into an idea more deeply or try something new.
