Encaustic is a luminous medium that consists of  beeswax, pigment and resin. Heated it can be smooth and shiny, textured and three-dimensional all on the same painting. We will explore melting and fusing, line and edge, working with paper, texture, and working with photographs. Encaustic, once an ancient process, is now updated with new tools and equipment. Each participant will be supplied with small demo panels (4x6”) on which to practice  new techniques. For larger work please bring 9x12" or smaller wood panels. The equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be provided. No prior art experience necessary. This is also an excellent opportunity to return and refresh your skills.

Encaustic is a luminous medium that is made up of molten beeswax, pigment and resin. It can be smooth and shiny, textured and three-dimensional all on the same painting. We will explore melting and fusing, line and edge, working with paper, texture and collage. It is ideal for working abstractly or in a more representational style. Encaustic, once an ancient process, is now updated with new tools and equipment. The participants will be supplied with a small wooden panels 4x5 inches on which to practice each of the techniques. Bring your own 9x12 inch pieces for larger work. This is a solvent free medium. Equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be provided by the instructor. No prior experience necessary.

For those of you who have taken the beginner workshop or classes from me, you can enroll as an independent study that will take place during the workshop. Contact me regarding the specifics.

Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, D.C. 27th Annual Week of the Arts where our upper school students break from their regular curriculum and focus on the arts.

Encaustic consists of beeswax, pigment and damar resin and was first used by the Egyptians for their Mummy Portraits. The process is now updated with new tools and equipment. Participants will learn safe studio practices, surface preparation, how to create luminous smooth and textured layers, fusing, collage, and a variety of other techniques.
