Encaustic painting is a process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Artists come to encaustic painting from many other mediums which then creates a dynamic and rich experience. Areas covered in this workshop include: safe studio practices, surface prep and resources.  Various demonstrations will be scheduled with plenty of time for students to experiment.  Learn techniques such as: melting through, line and edge, transfers, texture and collage.  Each person can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the workshop, artists will be familiar with a range of techniques which they can use as they develop their body of work.

Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. Bring wood panels up to 9x12" if you'd like to make larger, more resolved work.

An optional materials list will be supplied once you register.

This workshop is for artists who are new to encaustic or have only just started. Encaustic is a luminous medium that is made up of molten beeswax, pigment and damar resin. Once an ancient process, it is now updated with new tools and equipment. The process produces impressive results with jewel- like surfaces and textures. We will cover safe studio practices, melting and fusing, line and edge, working with paper, patterns and texture. The participant will be supplied with a small practice panel (4x6”) for each technique on which to practice. I supply the equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools. (Meets in W-7)

Experience the process of working with the solvent-free, luminous colors of encaustic in a supportive, experimental, and fun atmosphere
Beginners
Encaustic is a luminous medium that is made up of molten beeswax, pigment and resin. It can be smooth and shiny or textured and three-dimensional all on the same painting. We will explore melting and fusing the wax, making clean lines and edges, texture, and collage. Encaustic is ideal for working abstractly or in a more representational style. You will be given a small wooden panel (4x5”) for each of the techniques demonstrated, and you can bring your own 9x12 inch boards for larger work. The instructor will provide equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools.
