The process produces impressive results with luminous and jewel- like surfaces and textures. We will explore melting and fusing, line and edge, working with paper, and texture. The participant will be supplied with a small piece of board (4x6”) for each technique on which to practice. The equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be supplied

Techniques of melting and fusing the wax, making clean lines and edges, and methods of texture, and collage will be demonstrated and discussed. Encaustic is ideal for working abstractly or in a more representational style. A small wooden panel (4x5?) for each of the techniques demonstrated will be provided. Bring an optional 9x12 inch board for larger work. Equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools are supplied.

Create dynamic works of art using melted wax as you explore encaustic painting, a process that produces luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Beginners as well as working artists are welcome! Demonstrations and experimentation allow students to learn techniques such as melting through, line and edge, transfers, and texture and collage. Students can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the series, student will be familiar with a range of techniques they can use later to develop new work. Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. Students may bring wood panels up to 9”x12” if they wish to make larger, more resolved works.

Encaustic is a once ancient, luminous medium that is made of molten beeswax, pigment and resin. Artists come to encaustic painting from many other mediums which then creates a dynamic and rich experience. 
Areas covered include: safe studio practices, surface preparation and resources.  Various demonstrations will be scheduled with plenty of time to experiment. Explore melting and fusing, line and edge, collage and texture. Small demo panels, equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be provided. No encaustic experience necessary.

For experienced students this is an opportunity to review processes, delve into an idea more deeply or try something new.
