This two-day workshop is for those who have had some experience with encaustic painting and who are interested in using texture and patterns to not only enrich the surface of their work but to build the structure within the painting. We will use the accretion technique, the heated palette knife/iron to create stalagmites of wax, a thick stencil to create pattern and the batik pen for serpentine lines. There will be additional hardware store items as well as tools that are usually used for other media available to use in your exploration of pattern and surface.
Lynda regards working in the studio as an exploration. Her process is intuitive. Being open to experimentation and discovery allows the environment and ideas to flow easily into her work. This approach is very contagious in the workshops. Demonstrations are held periodically followed by periods of time to try it out!

September 2 Five Tuesday Eves Visual Arts Center of Richmond, VA

Complete

All Levels.

Experience the process of working with the solvent-free, luminous colors of encaustic in a supportive, experimental and fun atmosphere.

All Levels

Encaustic is a luminous medium that is made of molton beeswax, pigment and resin. It can be smooth and shiny, textured and three-dimensional all on the same painting. It is ideal for working abstractly or in a more representational style.  Encaustic, once an ancient process, is now updated with new tools and equipment. We will explore melting and fusing, line and edge, collage and texture. You will be given a small piece of board (4x5") on which to practice each technique demonstrated and should bring wood panels up to 9x12" for larger more resolved work. The equipment, paint, medium, brushes and tools will be provided. No encaustic experience necessary. For students who have taken encaustic in the past this is an opportunity to review processes, delve into an idea more deeply or try something new.
