This workshop is for students who are new to encaustic and for those who want to expand theirskills and explore more possibilities with paint.

The hot wax layering process of encaustic painting produces luminous surfaces and textures. After learning surface preparation and some background information, participants in this three-day workshop will experience the process of applying layers of transparent colors, imprinting and casting with botanical materials, incorporating image transfers, and working with stencils and textures.
Step-by-step demonstrations will be followed by plenty of time to work and improvise throughout the days. Participants will emerge with a range of skills to deepen the direction of their ongoing work and confidence to create paintings incorporating new skills.
Although Lynda works in a nonrepresentational style, she finds encaustic to be a versatile medium for all types of work. Understanding the properties of encaustic is the first step to incorporating it into your own work. Wherever you are with your art, Lynda will take you to the next level.

I recommend the exhibition of work by Kristin Polich whose incredible 3 dimensional fiber work is on exhibit at Artspace, Richmond, VA www.artspacegallery.org

She uses wire, yarn, fabric and other materials to construct her pieces.

These pieces walk the line between drawing and installation. The huge gallery was filled with ‘drawings’ which appeared to be the creation of some being that found a spot and went about her business of doing what they do in fierce competition. 

KP describes her work resembling netting or a web that symbolizes fragility and strength. She explores the connectedness and separation of these essential elements in the human experience.

An additional plus of her work is the shadow each one of these dimensional drawings cast. The distance they are placed from the wall and the angle of the light on them create a rich experience. The patterns of her web-like forms are cast again in black and white shadows and this interplay brings this beautiful work to life.

I long to see larger pieces along with these intimate works in the future.

This is excellent work and I highly recommend your catching this show or future exhibitions of her work.

Finished pieces can appear smooth, shiny, or textured as well as three-dimensional. This makes the medium ideal for working abstractly or in a representational style. In this workshop, you’ll begin to explore melting and fusing the wax, making clean lines and edges, and methods of paper and texture.

NEW Oct 15 Encaustic Monotypes workshop 1-4pm at Studio Two Three, Richmond, VA

Encaustic monotypes are made by painting your image on a heated palette with encaustic paint and then that image is lifted from the surface by applying rice paper. Silicone stencils and tools which are heat tolerant are also used on the hot plate to create interesting patterns and texture. These prints dry and solidify immediately leaving a ghost image on the plate that can again be worked into in quick succession.

SUPPLY LIST: Each student will be supplied with paint, medium, rice paper, mark making tools and silicone stencils. Bring your own paper to experiment with and any other heat tolerant tools you may want to try.

You will come away from the workshop having acquired a new skill and a stack of unique monotypes.
